Exceptional 1930s Samuel Kass Sequin Silk Swing Dress

This is an exquisite late thirties, early 40s black silk crepe dress whose bodice is entirely covered with hand painted flowers that are highlighted with hand applied sequins. It is one of the most spectacular dresses from this period I have had in the shop. Bouquets of sequin flowers in bright hues are applied over equally bold hand painted floral designs in brilliant colors, all of which are done in colors that are still bright and vivid. You would rarely see this level of handwork on a piece today - the cost and time involved would just be too cost prohibitive. Each flower is a beautiful dense pattern of tightly spaced sequins sewn slightly on their sides so you get a raised 3D effect. These cover the entire front of the bodice and trail down over the hip peplum. The cut of the dress is very simple so that design on the bodice is allowed to shine. The dress is also a labeled piece which is rare for this time period and gives you an idea of the quality of the piece. It is a remarkable example of the fine hand work and hand painting on fabric being done during this era and is really a treasure. Even the thread used to sew on the sequins matches the coordinating color of the flower worked on at the front. Excellent, museum quality condition.

Unlined and closes with a short back metal zipper at the neck and a second metal zipper at the side. Hand finished with all the sequin work and hand painted design work also done by hand - you can clearly see the hand work on the back side of the fabric (as photoed). Carefully stored. For a piece that is almost 100 years old is it to be considered in outstanding, museum quality condition.
