1970s Travilla Puffed Sleeve Silk & Gold Lame Gown

Famous for creating Marilyn Monroe's scintillating and iconic "subway grate" dress for the movie The Seven Year Itch, Travilla began as a costume designer before opening his own custom atelier in the 1950s. He did both until 1970, closed shop and then reopened in in the late seventies. Here we have a stunning gown from the late seventies. Using two fabrics for maximum drama and impact we have a solid chocolate silk on the top and that fabulous gold lame for the skirt. The bodice is quite beautiful add dramatic - the neckline is cut straight across with a simple skimming fit over the bust. The sleeves are pure drama as the drop slightly off the shoulder and then pouf out tremendously over gathered elastic cuffs. The skirt is cut with a fuller cut with yards and yards of fabric topped with a band at the waist of the same gold lurex that ties at the back to really emphasize a tiny waistline. The gold used in the skirt is absolutely beautiful and shimmers in the light when you move. There is just enough weight to the fabric to hold the shape and volume the piece requires but it is still surprisingly fluid. A beautiful piece. Excellent condition

The bodice is fully lined in a silky rayon and the skirt is interlined in a black organza. It closes at the back with a fine painted metal zipper. The tie belt extends at each side of the waist form the front attached banding. Hand finishes. Teh gold in person is a truer gold then how it photos
