1967 George Halley Couture Caftan

This is an absolutely incredible couture caftan that was custom made in 1967 and was photographed for Harpers Bazaar. The estate that this came from was said to be from a former model so it may indeed be the exact same caftan! Note that because it was a custom piece it has no label! The workmanship and detail is remarkable. It is very heavy - the interior silk taffeta and velvet exterior combined with that silver metal braiding and huge glass rhinestones all add up in weight. However once on it settles into place and is not unwieldy to wear at all! The crushed velvet adds a remarkable texture and I love the shade of blue - it feels like an exotic Mediterranean sea. The braiding used around the cuffs, front and hem is a metal thread and is set in big angled braided curves - this really gives it a rich and regal feel. Silver cording is hand set and acts as frames to the huge glass crystal rhinestones. The rhinestones on this are incredible and each is prong set into place. They encrust the front, hem and each cuff and cast a glow against the blue backdrop. I love how each arm widens as it nears the cuffs and ends in a slight point. The hem also widens. The effect is rich, regal and is a testament at the level of skill a custom piece from George Halley can have. It is truly unique and fabulous! Excellent condition

Sleeves: 22"
Shoulders: 15" from seam to seam
Bust: to 21" flat across from side seam to side seam
Waist: to 24" flat across from side seam to side seam
Hips: to 29" flat across from side seam to side seam
Length: 58" from neck to bottom hem

Fully lined in a iridescent blue silk taffeta and closes with a front painted metal zipper and a hook & eye at the bust. There are couple of rhinestone missing on the sleeves that you do not notice are not there at all and one on the front. If you wish I can switch out the front one with another before shipping - just add a note when buying. Slight breaks to the silver thread braid edging that are a natural occurrence for that type of fabric. Faint watermark near bottom and some very faint, small discolorations on one side. All of these are inconsequential to the piece and due to the way the fabric bounces the light and the abundance of the detailing none detract at all when worn. In fact the slight feel of patina add to the piece in my opinion!

Modern Sizing equivalent: XS-SML-MED as long as the shoulders fit the rest is very flexible. Do remember though that because of the detailing at the hem it cannot be shortened.
