1950s Full Beaded Nat Allen Gown & Coat

When you imagine the work that would have gone into creating just the fabric for this set, never mind piecing it together into the fabulous gown and coat that you see here - it is mind boggling! Each of this two piece set is completely covered in hand placed, hand sequin bead-work, sequins and rhinestones. And the bead work is not even flat but looped and then sewn into place so there is this slight 3D effect. Scattered amongst those discreet loops are built up layered flowers made of gold sequins to form the petals and topped with ruby red rhinestones for their centers. All the bead-work is done on a cream and gold silk brocade so there is an additional layer of texture sitting just under the outer layer of hand work. The dress is sheath like with a slightly nipped in wast and a simple sleeveless bodice. It has a scooped back and neck and a small side slit on one side near the hem. The coat sits over this for the ultimate dramatic statement and again is a simple design as to not take away form the textile it is created from! All the beads are glass and to give you an idea of the extent of work - both pieces weigh just a touch under 5lbs!!! Really remarkable and to find a modern equivalent - you would have to add a few zeroes to our price. Exceptional and in excellent condition.

Hips: 19" flat across the back from side seam to side seam
Length: 53" from shoulder to hem

Both the dress and the coat are fully lined in a cream silky rayon. The dress closes with a back painted metal zipper and the coat has two hook & eye at the neck. All the bed and sequin work on both pieces is hand done. Perhaps there is the very occasional missing bead or sequin but I see no areas of missing bead-work on either piece!

Note that I am loathe to separate this set so priced it as a combined piece - Individually each would be priced more then the combined price!
