1970s Mongolian Fur Trimmed Cream Silk Travilla Gown

Famous for creating Marilyn Monroe's scintillating and iconic "subway grate" dress for the movie The Seven Year Itch, Travilla began as a costume designer before opening his own custom atelier in the 1950s. He did both until 1970, closed shop and then reopened in in the late seventies. I would hazard that this gown is one of the early creations from when he reopened and is quite wonderful. The gown is undeniably exquisite in its cut and design. The long lean cut and the way the fabric drapes over the body and hides an inner foundation is marvelous. It is constructed from a rich cream colored, heavy silk crepe with the flaring of the skirt actually crated by the fabric and allowing each vertical panel of the dress to widen out as it nears the floor. The front is a simple strapless gown with an extraordinary detailing of soft cream Mongolian fur circling around the top of the bodice. From that detailing the gown falls to the floor in a sleek column. The entire bodice has a built in corset so you get no lines from the exterior but perfectly fit under. The back is genius with a flared, "mermaid" cut to the back hem that is done with couture precision. The genius is in both the cut and choice of such fine fabrications. Really a beauty and far better in person then how it photoed. Excellent condition.

Fully lined in a cream silk and has a built in, finished and boned corset through the bodice area. Zips up at the back with a painted nylon and metal zipper. It appears to have never been worn
