The bold necklace in circles—black onyx set in gold, striped with blue-white diamonds. By Bulgari... Cherry-red caftan in thin Racine wool jersey, by Grès...

One subject I haven't really covered in my columns here is jewellery. While I love jewellery, I personally choose to wear a few pieces I inherited every day. I do daydream about someday being able to afford a few major 1970s statement pieces (or at least borrow them for a big event). These oversized graphic designs take inspiration from art deco but exaggerate the proportions and amp up the colour combinations for a wholly glamorous look. When pared with simple yet chic outfits by the likes of Galanos and Stavropoulos, the diamonds (and emeralds and pearls and rubies and onyx) are allowed to speak for themselves—and don't you wish you saw more jewels like these on the red carpet right now?

Karen Graham, Appollonia, Raquel Welch and Anjelica Huston photographed by Bob Stone and Richard Avedon for Vogue, November 15th, 1972.

The bold necklace in rectangles—black-enamel-and-diamond oblongs from David Webb, each centered by a ruby spaced on a gold chain; whopping rectangular pendant centered by an immense emerald. Rectangular clasp of pave diamonds, black enamel, gold... Long shirtdress in white crêpe satin, by Galanos...

What goes for the jewel, goes for the beauty: Raquel Welch. One sensational girl, as you can see—in her first nightclub act, a holiday run at Las Vegas's Hilton International... in 'The Last of Sheila', her next movie... in all her glowing warmth and rich dark tumble of hair on there two pages. Raquel's on in just the sort of thing she loves to wear—wildly striped silk crêpe pyjamas, streaming with  color and topped by a long fringed scarf. By Leonard Fashion.

International stone... clean, pure... clear brilliance... a tactile cut. Gérard Jewels' bold crystal pendant, it's simply set in gold, with a flow of diamonds, clasped from beneath—the repoussé providing it's unexpected depth. She's in violet silk crêpe, dropped clear off the shoulder and falling in tiers of bias petals to the knee. It's Cardin's short evening dress.

The bold earrings—David Webb's huge pear-shaped drops of carved flecked jade framed in diamond-studded black enamel, swinging from gold-and-diamond links, ear-clips of black enamel, diamonds... Dress - barely glimpsed here—Stavropoulos's long float of cherry-red silk chiffon...

The bold necklace—in black and white: Van Cleef & Arpels' linking of blackest onyx circles, whitest baroque pearls... each pearl caught in a setting of gold, diamonds. Cultured baroque pearl earrings... Navy-and-silver zebra-striped pants and top in viscose and silk, by Tan Giudicelli...
