Faye Wong in Chungking Express.
I first came across Faye Wong in Wong Kar Wai’s 1994 movie Chungking Express, where she plays a cluelessly eccentric worker at a food stall in Hong Kong dreaming of sunny California. However, she’s actually more famous as a singer––in fact she’s one China’s (as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore’s) most famous Cantopop stars. Faye herself is pretty eccentric. Her musical style blends pop with more eclectic sounds, like Björk for the Chinese speaking population. She also has fantastic personal style. Since she rose to the fame in the 90s, she’s been churning out runway looks on tour and at events. From the looks of it, she has a penchant for Stella McCartney for Chloe, Helmut Lang, Alexander McQueen, as well as a host of lesser known avant garde designers. Lately, she seems to wear nothing else other than Phoebe Philo’s Céline. Fortunately for me (and you) some time ago I came across a fan Tumblr that has undertaken the painstaking task of sourcing Faye Wong’s best looks and pairing them with their runway counterparts––Faye from runway to real life.
