Is Matte Back? The New Mac Retro Matte Lipstick Review

When I walked into the Mac store last week I could not help but be drawn to these crazy bright matte lipsticks. Mac's Retro Matte Collection, which is more of a relaunch of their original Matte collection of 5 years or so ago, not counting the couple of matte shades in the RiRi Love Mac collection, is pretty fabulous. They wear extremely long and when combined with a pencil you can really create a fabulous lip shape. Plus the shock of a matte lip is dramatic and feels fresh - despite the fact that it is really such a retro look!

Purists will be crying out - but your photo on the front page looks shiny - and yes I do have to admit that I did combine my matte shades with a slick of my treasured, secret weapon, the non-budging YSL gloss stain. I put a slick of the YSL stain on first then applied a single coat of each of my two new matte colors - Ruby Woo topped by Relentlessly Red (which to me seems more of a pink - hence the pairing with my pink jacket). Last, I used "High Energy", their pro long wear lip pencil to cheat my crooked lip line into a nice non-crooked line. I know make-up artists everywhere just cringed that I did this last but that is what works for me. Another tiny secret with such strong color is to take a brush with come concealer and clean up and perfect the line around your lip with it and then dust around the lip with translucent powder.

Bottom line - I love the retro feel of these and will def go back to try more of the colors in this line!
