Celebrity Weddings

A high profile wedding often catches the attention of the starry eyed observers as well as the cynics. Even if the reactions differ many of us can’t help but observe. Outside of the fact that high profile weddings by definition receive a great deal of media attention, there is something to be said for the modern day fairytale these unions represent which is why everyone, from fashion publications like Vogue to the blogosphere, were speculating and reporting on the Kimye wedding months leading up to the inevitably lavish event. With a rehearsal dinner in Versailles, France and the wedding taking place in Florence, Italy, two haute couture wedding dresses, one by Givenchy the other by Balmain, the couple delivered in true Kimye fashion.

Fascinations with celebrity weddings are nothing new. However, the nature of celebrity has changed, and thus, life events of celebrity become spectacles from the first photos of the bride in her wedding dress, to the magazine exclusive, to photos of their first-born child.

One can only be inspired by the personal, unguarded and understated glamour of celebrity weddings past. Elvis wed Priscilla in Las Vegas in a dress she reportedly designed herself. Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio wed at San Francisco city hall, Monroe dressed simply in a well-tailored classic suit. Elizabeth Taylor didn’t wear two dresses at her 1964 wedding to Richard Burton but she did marry Burton a second time in 1975. Taylor didn’t wear white at either wedding. From the big day of Jacqueline Bouvier, a New York society princess, to Grace Kelly, a movie star who became a princess, weddings of decades past are truly the stuff of fairytales.
